The Historical Town

Cianciana benefits from a pleasant location and mild climate all year round. The town of Cianciana is situated on a hill from where one can see the African Sea towards the South-West and is almost completely surrounded by the Sican Mountains which shelter the town from cold winds. The town’s geographical landscape is captivating: from olive groves and vineyards to the Mediterranean scrub to the woods of Monte Cavallo. Cianciana was founded in 1646 when Don Diego Joppolo acquired the feuds of the Lord Barons of Cianciana and his wife Dame Sigismonda obtained authority from the Viceroy to build and populate Cianciana’s fief.
The population of Cianciana, stable until the early 800s, increased in the 1830s with the opening of the sulphur mines.
Their closure in the 1960s called for a mass exodus to the North of Italy, Germany, France and England. Today the population lives mainly of agriculture and some flourishing craft activity. Cianciana is a corner of Sicily inhabited by cordial and festive people.
